Being in the pool is best thing to be doing in the hot days of August! Staying “Wet and Mild!” Things are kind of slowing down after a hot and bustling summer here, and it’s a great time to relax, lay on a raft in the pool, read a book and do a little exploring of cool restaurants, craft cocktails, and iconic swimming holes!
This summer my husband and I set out on a quest to find a couple of new quirky “secret” places in Austin… If you’ve ever been to Casa del Sol, you know we like things that are a little different, original and artistic. That being said, our new treasured finds are the Ah Sing Den, on East 6th street… and The Pool Burger at Deep Eddy Pool.
The Ah Sing Den is kind of a mystical Asian dive with great craft cocktails. You feel like you are in an Arthur Conan Doyle novel setting… waiting over a magical drink for a mysterious informant. Even the drink menu has poetry for every drink!
A real sweet experience, sitting in the patio with the bamboo and the fountain, and the colorful lanterns hanging from the ceiling!
After a nice dip in spring-fed Deep Eddy Pool, in the middle of Austin, or paddle boarding LadyBird Lake, just amble on over to the Pool Burger! It’s a laid-back beachy setting with a shiny Airstream kitchen serving up hamburgers, while the friendly bartenders whip out the best summer drinks ever! Try the frozen Hurricanes during $5 Happy Hour! But watch out! Potent!
Our favorite swimming hole, (besides laying in a raft in our pool right here) is Krauze Springs. It’s an idyllic spring fed rock pool on private ranch land that you pay to enter. The pool empties out at one end, forming a waterfall over a fern-filled cliff. You climb down old metal steps to the natural pool below, where you can swim through the waterfall into a small cave, or lay on the rocks and sun. The water is crisp and refreshing in this summer heat. The family has added a sweet little garden you can walk through, and you can take a small hike along the cypress lined stream that the pool empties into. A very friendly and peaceful place. I have been going there for 30 years!!
